The Athens Cancer Center offers radiation therapy utilizing the most advanced linear accelerator for treating cancer — the first in the area.
The Center collaborates with O'Bleness Memorial Hospital and the O'Bleness Health System to provide an array of cancer services.
Image guided radiation treatment (IGRT) addresses the important clinical challenge of tumor motion. Dynamic targeting IGRT identifies exactly where a tumor is and how it is moving every day just prior to the treatments or even during treatments. This technology makes it possible to use radiation therapy to treat tumors with precision that were not really treatable before IGRT was developed.
Previously, physicians treated a larger area of the body near the cancerous tumor to compensate for any tumor movement. IGRT enables the radiation therapist to locate the tumor before each dose is administered while the patient is in treatment position, which minimizes the volume of healthy tissue exposed to radiation during the treatments. Now patients with cancer have access to this advanced technology close to home at the Athens Cancer Center.
Aaron O. Williams, MD, and Anjali Ambekar, MD, radiation oncologists, offer radiation therapy at the Athens Cancer Center located in Suite 170 at the north end of the Castrop Center in the O'Bleness Medical Park. A designated parking area is provided just outside the Cancer Center entrance.
