The Cornwell Center for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Care brings together a progressive alliance of healthcare professionals who provide a comprehensive array of services related to cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. State-of-the-art diagnostic testing, treatment, rehabilitation, patient education and clinical research, as well as professional training programs, are available at this contemporary regional center serving southeastern Ohio.
Located at the west end of O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, the Cornwell Center features O'Bleness' low-risk catheterization laboratory for cardiac and vascular procedures. The O'Bleness Catheterization Laboratory offers a diagnostic procedure called a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE). An imaging probe is placed inside the patient's esophagus, which uses ultrasound to display a visual representation of the heart's movements, valves and chambers. In addition to diagnostic procedures the catheterization laboratory offers low-risk peripheral angioplasty and stenting of lower extremities, as well as angioplasty and stenting of renal arteries. An additional procedure places a filter in the vena cava, a large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart and lungs. Catheterization laboratory services are available to both outpatients and inpatients.
Also located in the Cornwell Center are offices for physicians specializing in cardiology, vascular medicine, and internal medicine, and for research programs. Consult our Cornwell Center Directory for a complete listing.
In addition, HeartWorks, O'Bleness' cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program in conjunction with WellWorks at Ohio University, is located in the Cornwell Center. These programs are designed to help patients with heart or lung disease recover more quickly from their illness and enhance their quality of life. The programs offer individually prescribed exercises, education, and nutrition and stress management counseling to help participants begin living a healthier lifestyle.
The Foster B. Cornwell and Helen W. Cornwell Memorial Gift of $1.2 million helped make the facility a reality. The Cornwells were long-time Athens residents and Mr. Cornwell practiced law in Athens from 1935 until his retirement in 1995.
