Cornwell Center for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Care

The Cornwell Center for Cardiovascular and Diabetes Care brings together a progressive alliance of healthcare professionals who provide a comprehensive array of services related to cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. State-of-the-art diagnostic testing, treatment, rehabilitation, patient education and clinical research, as well as professional training programs, are available at this contemporary regional center serving southeastern Ohio.

Located at the west end of O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, the Cornwell Center features O'Bleness' low-risk catheterization laboratory for cardiac and vascular procedures. In addition to diagnostic procedures the catheterization laboratory offers low-risk peripheral angioplasty and stenting of lower extremities, as well as angioplasty and stenting of renal arteries. An additional procedure places a filter in the vena cava, a large vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart and lungs. Catheterization laboratory services are available to both outpatients and inpatients. For more information, see "O'Bleness' catheterization laboratory adds services" in the Spring 2007 issue of Health Watch.

Also located in the Cornwell Center are offices for physicians specializing in cardiology, vascular medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and internal medicine, and for research programs. Consult our Cornwell Center Directory for a complete listing.

In addition, HeartWorks, O'Bleness' cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program in conjunction with WellWorks at Ohio University, is located in the Cornwell Center. These programs are designed to help patients with heart or lung disease recover more quickly from their illness and enhance their quality of life. The programs offer individually prescribed exercises, education, and nutrition and stress management counseling to help participants begin living a healthier lifestyle.

A progressive alliance of healthcare providers - O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, MidOhio Cardiology and Vascular Consultants, the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and OhioHealth - was involved in developing the Center.

The Foster B. Cornwell and Helen W. Cornwell Memorial Gift of $1.2 million helped make the facility a reality. The Cornwells were long-time Athens residents and Mr. Cornwell practiced law in Athens from 1935 until his retirement in 1995.
